So vintage I don’t know what to do with it

UPDATE: I showed my mother the pictures of this outfit and it turns out she made it when she was 18!

A few weeks ago, my grandmother called me from England to tell me about an outfit she had found while going through some old belongings in her house. Apparently she had bought it for my mother made it when she was my age  18 and it doesn’t look like it’s ever been worn. So she asked me my waist size and we were delighted to find out that my mother wore the same clothing size as me when she was in her 20’s 18. She asked me if I wanted it, and naturally I said yes! I had no idea what I was getting, but the surprise is totally the best part. This is what arrived in the mail today:

It’s two pieces – a jacket top and a high waisted skirt. It’s surprisingly flattering, fits shockingly well (especially considering that my mother is 5 inches shorter than me), and honestly now I have no idea what to do with it! It’s not something that matches my “style” and I’m really not sure how I’m even suppose to wear the top – with a blouse underneath perhaps?

So now what to do? Do I cut it up and modernize it? Or do I keep it and maybe someday I’ll have an excuse to wear it?

Or do I keep it forever to remind me of the awesome seamstress that taught me to sew?

  1. Oh definitely keep it (intact) forever AND wear it. It looks incredible on you. Who needs an excuse–wear it immediately! If it’s not warm enough, maybe a cardi or a shrug over it, but as is I think it looks fab.

  2. I agree with Shelley, above, looks FANTASTIC on you. I wouldn’t alter it, just wear it as is for a summer party or something. How great is it that your mom wore this? And that your grandmother kept it??? My own mother is at least 5in TALLER than I am so I’m not as lucky as you are. Enjoy the outfit and its history.
