Tutorial: 1/12 Scale Dorm Room Bed

This is a 1/12 scale dorm room bed, adjustable to three heights and also bunkable!

This one was made with love at TechShop Pittsburgh, and I designed the bed posts so that they didn’t require drilling or routing by making them out of a stack of three 1/8″ thick pieces. Its adjustability is done with interlocking hooks from the hook and eye fasteners used in clothing. It’s not the sturdiest method, but fortunately there aren’t any real college kids jumping on these beds :-).

What you will need:

  • 1/8″ wood (I used cherry from Ocooch Hardwoods)
  • Wood glue and a way to apply small amounts of it (I use toothpicks and a glue syringe)
  • A laser cutter or another way to cut small precisely sized parts out of wood
  • 6.5 feet of thin string or twine
  • A needle (that will accommodate your string)
  • 16 size 1 hook and eye closures (like these), you’ll only need the hook part
  • Super glue or another adhesive that will glue metal to wood
